The CHC Center in Wyckoff is in the process of submitting plans to the towns of Wyckoff and Hawthorne for a major complex of 258 dwelling units to be built on 19 acres of forest stretching between Wyckoff and Hawthorne.
The planned structures will rise approximately four stories high and cover an area equal to 5 football fields. To build, they will need to move 5,798 dump trucks full of soil. To accommodate the large increase in traffic caused by this project, parts of Sicomac Avenue will be expanded to four lanes and a traffic light will be installed at the intersection with Cedar Hill Avenue.
Since this 19-acre forest is located at the highest point in the area and consists of steep slopes, and since construction will completely remove this watershed, local homes as well as business in Hawthorne at lower elevations may experience increased flooding and erosion. For proof of what such a development can create, look no further than the recent Lafayette Hills complex.
